Monaco, a worldwide cultural capital

Monaco is one of the world's finest cultural capitals where are majestically represented all the arts. Regarding its architecture, Monaco has many buildings that have marked every period of its existence. These include the chapelle Sainte Devote in the Vallon des Gaumates, which was built in the eleventh century, in memory of the frail craft that had failed and where Sainte Devote was lying.


Witness of the Baroque period, the chapelle de la Miséricorde was built in the XVIIth century in the Old City. The Prince's Palace, on the Rock was built on the site of a fortress erected by the Genoese in 1215. You can admire its Italian-style gallery and its XVIth century frescoes; the Salon Louis XV all in yellow and gold, the Salon Bleu, wonder of blue and gold harmony; the Salon Mazarin covered with multicolored wood; the Salle du Trône decorated with a large Renaissance fireplace; the Chapelle Palatine built in the seventeenth century; the Sainte Marie tour, with white stones from La Turbie; the Cour d'Honneur and its marble of Carrara XVIIth century's staircase... It encloses the highest density of the architectural treasures of the Principality. The second most important building of the Rock is the oceanographic museum, built early last century on the initiative of Prince Albert 1st, nicknamed the "Navigator Prince." 100,000 tons of stone from La Turbie were needed to build this imposing building located on a cliff to the Mediterranean Sea, 80 meters below.


Moreover, the casino and the opera are among the most respected sources worldwide as Monaco emblems, were built in 1879 under the direction of Charles Garnier 4 years only after having designed the opera in Paris. Located in the heart of Monaco, they remind Baroque architecture whose inner exuberance tapestries, paintings and gilded baroque are equaled the external beauty of the building. It is at the same time that was built the Cathedral of Monaco. Only built with white stones, this Roman-Byzantine style church, contains the tombs of the deceased Princes. It houses many sculptures and paintings including a magnificent piece from the famous painter Louis Brea of ​​Nice, dating back to 1500. 

The Monaco Printemps des Arts is an example of cultural achievement of international which spreads concerts in many places in the Principality. Since 2003, Marc Monnet has become dircetor of this annual event that involves the most prestigious ensembles and major figures of classical music in the Principality in all theaters, from the small Théâtre des Variétés, to the beautfiful Auditorium Rainier III, by going into the huge room underwater concerts Grimaldi forum. But also historic sites like the Cathedral and the Oceanographic Museum, or the Opera Garnier. This one was built in 1879 and is one of the most beautiful concert halls of opera in Europe. Masterpieces have even been created as Jules Massenet's Amadis and Don Quichote or the Ravel L'Enfant et les sortilèges.

This is obviously the case of the Monte Carlo Philharmonic orchestra which is also a leading figure of classical music in the Principality. It was founded in 1856 and directed by the greatest like Paul Paray, Igor Markevitch, Yakov Kreizberg, Yehudi Menuhin and Richard Strauss himself. The greatest soloists have also performed with the orchestra as Thomas Beecham, Leonard Bernstein, Kyril Kondrashin, Georges Cziffra, Ivry Gitlis, Isaac Stern, Jean-Pierre Rampal. The orchestra has also created essential works such as Gabriel Fauré's Penelope and Masques et Bergamasques. The orchestra performs repeatedly since 1956 in the courtyard of the Prince's Palace and offers high quality concerts for summer lovers.
